“Elysium” Gets Luna
Diego Luna has joined the cast of “Elysium,” Neill Blomkamp’s second feature film that’s already nabbed names such as Matt Damon, Sharlto Copley and Jodie Foster. He’ll play Julio, the best friend of Damon’s character. Additionally, Variety has a rough sketch of the plot, which “revolves around aliens and humans doing battle on earth.”

“Weeds” Star Gets Savage
Also from Variety comes the news that Demian Bichir, who stars on “Weeds” as a Mexican politician who moonlights as a ruthless drug kingpin, has joined the cast of Oliver Stone’s “Savages” as the two-timing attorney of Salma Hayek’s very own drug lord character.

Jonah Hill Grabs A “Pitchfork”
It’s looking like a possible “Cyrus” reunion for directors Jay and Mark Duplass and comedian Jonah Hill. The Los Angeles Times reports that Hill might star in their upcoming feature called “Pitchfork,” about the mother of an indie rocker who dies in a car accident, prompting her to seek vengeance against a snarky blogger who railed against the rocker—but she’s surprised to find out the blogger is just a teen. - Paul Verhoeven is angling to get back into the erotic thriller game with ‘Eternal,’ a film about a man who has a love affair with a woman who turns out to be a ghost that wants his soul. The words “Paul Verhoeven”, “erotic thriller” and “ghost that wants his soul” in the same sentence just made this writer’s day.

- The ‘Men in Black 3′ casting continues with a Betty White cameo and Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls as “Devil Girl.” In other news, this writer never thought he’d string “Betty White” and “Pussycat Dolls” in the same sentence. Today is a strange day.

- Vince Vaughn has taken up a stance in regards to the gay joke in the trailer for ‘The Dilemma’: He hopes it stays in the final film. Via Deadline:

“Let me add my voice of support to the people outraged by the bullying and persecution of people for their differences, whatever those differences may be. Comedy and joking about our differences breaks tension and brings us together. Drawing dividing lines over what we can and cannot joke about does exactly that; it divides us. Most importantly, where does it stop.”

The reminders come because we’re close to the anniversary of Matthew Shepard’s brutal murder and also because they’re volatile issues that must be discussed, but also because, hey, we’re evolving, and perhaps we as a culture have reached the point where, “Ugh, you’re so GAY” is no longer considered harmless or innocuous. Or funny.

Someone forgot to tell the Universal marketing department.

According to Deadline Hollywood, the new trailer for the Ron Howard comedy ‘The Dilemma’ has been yanked and promptly replaced with one that doesn’t open with Vince Vaughn complaining how “electric cars are gay.” Within the context of an appropriately rated film (the MPAA ratings board generally gives homophobic jokes a nice, friendly PG-13), the quip probably wouldn’t cause too much controversy, but it seems that GLAAD is irritated that such casual gay-mocking would appear in an “all ages” movie trailer. And I believe they have a good point, actually.
