‘Apollo 18′ Trailer: ‘Paranormal Activity’ on the Moon

The first full-length trailer for the Timur Bekmambetov-produced sci-fi thriller ‘Apollo 18′ has arrived online, and at least it looks to be taking the popular-right-now “found footage” trend in a direction that’s different from what we’ve seen before. Directed by Gonzalo López-Gallego (making his English-language debut), ‘Apollo 18′ tells of an 18th Apollo mission to the moon that was always kept secret because it involved what appears to be a deadly encounter with aliens.

It’s a smart idea, and one they can totally play around with by trying to convince moviegoers that the canceled trip to the moon may have really happened and our government covered it up. Teenagers these days barely remember the names of any of the folks who traveled to the moon anyway, and so it shouldn’t be hard to use some good old fashioned viral trickery to sell a few extra tickets.

The one problem the film may have is that it looks ridiculously claustrophobic, and there’s not a whole lot you can do based on the rules they set up. The spaceship is tight, the astronauts are limited in where they can go and how much they can move, and the cameras onboard the ship that look to be doing most of the work here can only give us so much in terms of payoff. So, essentially, we are relying a lot on the actors to sell the tension, the scares and the sci-fi element, which could totally work and could totally not work. Here’s hoping for the former.

Watch the trailer after the jump and let us know what you think. ‘Apollo 18′ hits theaters on April 22nd.

Watch Jaleel "Urkel" White Remake ‘Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son’

There’s no way that last year’s ‘Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus’ could whet your appetite for Jaleel White, so how about an added dose in drag, Tyler Perry-style?

The folks over at Funny or Die have offered up a new look at the grown-up Steve Urkel in ‘Can’t Wait for the Movies: Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son.’ Basically, unable to contain their enthusiasm for Perry’s latest mega opus/Big Momma story, where Malcolm Turner and his stepson go undercover at an all-girls performing arts school, White leads a handmade remake of the not-released movie, rife with dancing, ridiculousness and even Ini Kamoze’s “Here Comes the Hotstepper.”

Who needs to watch ‘Like Father, Like Son’ now? Urkell for the win! Hit the jump to see for yourself. And because we can’t resist adding in a little bit of old-school Urkel, you can check out how White’s dancing has evolved over the years by hitting the second video of “The Urkel Dance.” (And if you want a few more chuckles, check out our Eric D. Snider’s review of the longer Martin Lawrence version of ‘Big Momma 3.)

Horror News: ‘The Exorcist’ in 60 Seconds; ‘Hansel and Gretel’ Go 3D; ‘Radical’ Tom Sizemore

– Cameron Romero — yes, zombie maestro George A. Romero’s son — has a new film on the horizon, ‘Radical.’ Three American press members are held captive by an arrogant, techno-savvy terrorist who is targeting the US government. Tom Sizemore stars. Romero told Dread Central, “when the uprising in Egypt started, a light bulb went off,” and the real horrors happening around the world became the inspiration for his new film. ‘Radical’ is set for a March release and has a brand new one-sheet.

– Girly Korean pop stars battle a curse during the making of their newest single. Bloody-Disgusting has all the latest images from ‘White.’

– Arrow Video always does a bang-up job on their DVD releases, and their first multi-film box set from Brian Yuzna’s Fantastic Factory is loaded with a smorgasbord of zombies, demons, spiders, werewolves and other goodies. The movies included are: ‘Beyond Re-Animator,’ ‘Faust: Love of the Dead,’ ‘Romasanta’ and ‘Arachnid.’ Pay Jeffrey Combs and the gang another visit on April 18th.

Is ‘I Am Here …. Now’ the New Worst Film of All Time? [Video]

Neil Breen is a Las Vegas real estate agent who plays a messianic alien in his latest movie, ‘I Am Here …. Now.’ The actor, writer, director and sometimes caterer has created his latest indie feature, and the trailer — which features lightning effects and dolphins — is not to be missed. We didn’t think it was possible to top the awesome WTF-ness of ‘Enthiran,’ but Breen’s movie is a serious contender.

‘I Am Here …. Now’ (note the four ellipses — very important) is being called a supernatural thriller that “challenges the human species relationships to social revolution, political revolution, animal rights, green renewable energy, religion, revelations and the human species’ place in the universe.” In case you couldn’t tell by the men in business suits being crucified, none of the metaphors are subtle.

The special effects are pretty embarrassing. The dirty-talking babes and alien combination is reminiscent of some kind of Raëlian thing. Breen plays the big daddy space cadet/godhead figure who is sick of the greed and corruption humans are spreading. Apparently there’s a “stunning dramatic conclusion,” which may or may not reveal that Breen’s mask is a dollar-store version of a ‘Planet of the Apes’ costume — because that would just make everything perfect.

If you dig the cheese of ‘Birdemic’ and can appreciate the weirdness of outsider sci-fi, check out the trailer after the jump. The film screens tomorrow at L.A.’s Cinefamily where Breen will be present for a Q&A. That’s an event you won’t want to miss.

  • Mary Elizabeth Winstead will join Benjamin Walker, Anthony Mackie and Dominic Cooper in the Timur Bekmambetov-directed ‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter’ as honest Abe’s wife, Mary Todd.

  • Scoot McNairy (‘Monsters’) and Ben Mendelsohn (‘Animal Kingdom’) have been cast in Andrew Dominik’s ‘Cogan’s Trade.’ Variety also mentions that McNairy is being considered as the love interest in Ridley Scott’s ‘Prometheus.’

  • A new ‘Thor‘ trailer is now online that expands upon the stuff we’ve already seen, but adds a few more touches of character, action and monsters. Check it out below.

‘The Hangover 2′ Sneak Peek: Check Out First Footage from the Set

If you can ignore the spazzy ‘Entertainment Tonight’-ness of this video — including the terrible questions — there’s some new footage from the set of ‘Hangover 2′ that you might be interested in. Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis and Justin Bartha reunite for an exotic Thailand adventure, otherwise known as Stu’s wedding. The film hits theaters May 26, and ET paid the boys a visit to find out what’s in store for us this summer.

When plans for an easy, breezy wedding brunch go awry, the Vegas veterans go Bangkok crazy. ET’s video shows a boat flying on shore like a missile, a cranky conversation with Stu on a crowded street and we get a peek at Ken Jeong, who returns for part deux. Also joining the crew again is Mike Tyson — hopefully with his tiger.

‘My Kidnapper’: Man Befriends His Kidnapper on Facebook and Makes a Film About It

Back in 2003, eight tourists were backpacking through the ruins of Cuidad Perdida in Northern Colombia when they were kidnapped by militants who held them for four months. One of those kidnapped, a British man named Mark Henderson, was released after being held captive for 102 days when senior clergy from the Roman Catholic Church helped negotiate his release. The militants weren’t holding the backpackers for ransom, but instead wanted to “publicise the persecution of Indian villagers and massacres carried out by rightwing paramilitaries,” according to a 2003 BBC report.

At the time this was the biggest kidnapping to happen in Colombia in two decades, and once he was released Henderson spoke of an extremely “painful” experience that included 18-hour days trekking through the dense jungle. Though he thought his ordeal was finally over, one year later Henderson began receiving Facebook requests from two of his kidnappers. They began a dialogue that eventually turned into a new mission for Henderson — one that would find him returning to the scene of the original crime in an effort to film a documentary about revisiting the experience and how it impacted not only himself and his family, but his kidnappers as well.
