‘Battleship’ Trailer Commentary: ‘Blue Crush’ Meets ‘Armageddon,’ Still Awesome

The “Battleship” trailer has invaded theaters and computer screens, and MTV News has a few things to say about it.

By now you’ve probably seen the trailer in all its Taylor Kitsch-y, Brooklyn Decker-filled glory, but what you haven’t seen is the souped-up version featuring expert commentary from MTV Movie Blog head honcho Josh Wigler and MTV News Deputy Managing Editor Eric Ditzian.

Click on the video above to let the hilarity ensue, and then click past the jump to read even more thoughts on the trailer.

Clearly, no topic is off-limits, from Decker being in a role that’s very “new” for her to taking Alexander Skarsgård in any capacity that we can to comparing the awesome bubble visual effect to “The Simpsons Movie.” The guys thought the trailer could use at bit more Rihanna, and we’re going to have to agree, but at least there’s a whole lot of awesome action to look forward to.

Ditzian is a bit concerned about the relationship between Decker and Kitsch taking over the movie and detracting from the aliens versus Navy core of the flick, but only time will tell if that is warranted. Still, the trailer has plenty of cool battle sequences with enough homages to the “Battleship” board game to keep us happy. The bottom line? The movie might be “Blue Crush” meets “Armageddon,” but we’re still looking forward to it.

George Lucas’ ‘Red Tails’ Trailer Flies Online

The “Red Tails” trailer has soared onto the Internet at long last, and it sure does look impressive.

It’s been a while since we saw any war movie have such impressive aerial scenes as “Red Tails” is showing off. The trailer comes at us from Yahoo, and though it was a long time coming (about 23 years in the dreaming, to be exact), if taking its sweet time to come to theaters is the price we had to pay for those aerial fight scenes to look as gorgeous as they do, then it’s a price we’re willing to pay.

“Red Tails” follows the true story of the Tuskegee Airmen who fought with the Allied forces in World War II. The Tuskegee men were segregated black pilots who were given second-rate planes and missions after they were shipped out into combat. But when a dangerous mission arose — providing safe escort to bombers in broad daylight — the Tuskegee pilots stepped up to the challenge in order to fight for their country and against the racial discrimination that had been holding them back.

The flick stars Terrence Howard, Bryan Cranston, Cuba Cooding Jr, Method Man, Ne-Yo and Nate Parker and is directed by “Treme’s” Anthony Hemingway. “Red Tails” has been something of a passion project for George Lucas, who began developing the idea back in 1988. It wasn’t until 2007 that John Ridley came on board to write the screenplay for the movie, and then the next year that Hemingway signed up as director.

See Buffed-Up Tom Hardy in New ‘Warrior’ Trailer

The new trailer for brother-versus-brother fight movie ‘Warrior‘ hit today, with glimpses of a much buffer Tom Hardy and a battered Joel Edgerton.

Hardy (‘Inception’) stars as the younger brother who joined the Marines, and Edgerton (‘Animal Kingdom’) plays the older one who became a teacher and had a family he now can’t support. Nick Nolte is already drawing Oscar buzz as the father of this fractious clan, a former alcoholic who’s now training Hardy.

Picture ‘The Fighter,’ but with mixed martial arts and the two brothers getting into the ring and fighting each other. Gavin O’Connor, the man behind the inspirational Olympics hockey pic ‘Miracle,’ wrote and directed.

Our own Erik Childress pronounced it better than ‘The Fighter’ after seeing it at CinemaCon.

Watch the trailer after the jump.

‘Captain America’ Trailer Commentary: A Shot-By-Shot Analysis

Captain America” has thrown his mighty shield, and we’re very excited to catch it.

The star-spangled superhero makes his big-screen debut this summer — no, we’re not counting the 1990 film, thank you very much — and we couldn’t be more excited. We’re so excited, in fact, that we couldn’t stop ourselves from gushing about the new “Captain America” trailer with some of our colleagues here in the MTV newsroom.

To that end, your shield-slinging Movies Blog editor (that’s me, fyi!) and MTV Splash Page’s esteemed editor Rick Marshall sat down on camera to dissect the latest trailer from Marvel Studios. Check out our expert commentary track in the video above, and click past the jump for some of the highlights!

Skinny Steve
Pretty surreal to see the miniature Chris Evans toddling around as Steve Rogers, isn’t it? The expert movie magic that went into creating “Skinny Steve” helps to reinforce the idea that Cap’s origin as a weakling is what gives him such strength as a super-soldier.

(Bowler) Cap’s Fan Club
As much as I love Captain America, I have to admit my particular affinity for the crew he’s leading, the Howling Commandos. A lot of love goes out to Neal McDonough as the bowler cap wearing Dum Dum Dugan, and I’m very curious to see more from Bucky, Union Jack and the rest of the squad.

Heavy Artillery
Speaking of Dum Dum, there’s a moment early on in the trailer where we see him blasting away with a highly sophisticated hand cannon of some sort. Looks like our heroes are getting their hands on some of Hydra’s hi-tech equipment, which suits us just fine!

The “Hobbit” Connection
Richard Armitage makes a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance as one of Cap’s enemies, warning our hero that he represents “the voice of many.” I’m not sure he’ll have a huge role to play in the flick, but we’ll definitely be seeing a lot more of him when Armitage shows up in “The Hobbit” as Thorin Oakenshield, hero of the dwarves.

Shield-Slinger
Really, it’s impossible to discuss every single details of the trailer without boring you to tears, so let me just say this: watching Steve Rogers throw his shield at a room filled with bad guys has me very, very excited for the superhero’s July debut.

Trailers: ‘Mr Popper’s Penguins,’ Last Night’ and ‘The Big Bang’

A whole slew of trailers are popping up on the web this week. We got the full ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ trailer last night, and now three more.

First up: Ace Ventura found his penguins!

His name is now Mr. Popper, as part of the classic children’s book, and the animals have whittled down to a bunch of pesky penguins, but the goofiness remains. In this cinematic version of ‘Mr. Popper’s Penguins,’ the man doesn’t breed a whole bunch of them, but rather inherits some and watches them take over his life. This includes teaching them dance moves to the applicably chilly stylings of one Vanilla Ice.

Check it out for yourself after the jump, along with peeks into ‘Last Night’ and ‘The Big Bang.’

‘Arthur’ Trailer Keeps All The Fun Of The Original With More Nerd Pop Culture References

Finally, after many exciting teaser images and much fanfare over the course of the past year, it’s nice to get a good look at what “Arthur” has in store for us.

And, as expected, the trailer far exceeds our expectations. As leading man Russell Brand promised, there are many homages to Dudley Moore and the original film, but it’s clear that this latest version is coming into its own as well. Everything that was great about the original — the lovable rich drunk, his dour old sidekick, his easy-going fiance and spitfire love interest — have been included and amplified for the trailer and that couldn’t make us happier. And there are “Star Wars” and “Batman” references, so how can this go wrong?

Brand and Helen Mirren are as perfectly matched as Moore and John Gielgud were in the original, and maybe it’s just that I’m a sucker for some quality Mirren but I almost like them better. Jennifer Garner’s character Susan Johnson is also a bit exaggerated from Jill Eikenberry’s take on it in the 1981 flick, and it might end up making her character that much more complex.

Only time will tell whether Greta Gerwig is a good replacement for Liza Minelli’s Linda Marolla, but from the little (emphasis on little) we saw in the trailer it looks like she could be. And it’s also nice to see Luis Guzman as Arthur’s driver getting a bigger role. He’s almost a part of the Hobsen character that has been amplified and exaggerated only for the better in the remake. Because, really, you can never get enough Batmobiles in non-Batman films.
