Nokia World 2010: What We Know So Far

As you may or may not be aware, as we speak, Nokia is holding its biggest event of the year in London; Nokia World 2010. This is where past years have seen Nokia unveil all of its latest and greatest innovations and technologies and 2010 doesn’t look to be any different.

The announcements have sarted right from the word go, with Niklas Savander, Nokias Executive Vce President proclaiming “Nokia. Is. Back.” A bold statement which really sets the tone of the event and has since been followed with three announcements. The first being a new Nokia C6 touting CBD (ClearBlack Display) screen tecnology; the Finnish asnwer to Apple’s Retina Display. The CBD tecnology is said to reproduce blacks that are “blacker than black” explains Anssi Najoki, Nokia’s Executive Vice President of Mobile Solutions, who also went on to say the Nokia C6 is “a premium touchscreen that provides a higher contrast viewing experience than anything before. the background of the ClearBlack Display is blacker than black, because we have used a polariser to remove unwanted reflections for important outdoor visibility. It has lower power consumption too. It’s not only blacker, it’s also greener.” The C6 is also said to have an 8 megapixel camera, Ovi Maps with Navigation, a stainless steel shell and Ovi Map functions whiuch are said to compete FourSquare and Facebook Places.

Next up, we have the Nokia C7, a Symbian touting, HD video recording capable, social media orientated Smartphone which also packs in a 3.5 inch AMOLED display, an 8 megapixel camera, 8GB of storage, microSD support for up to 32GB cards and active noise cancellation. The C7’s real party piece however, is its battery; which is said to be capable of up to 27 days in standby. An incredible claim which if true, will almost certainly see the battery life of the C7 exceed that of any other smartphone on the market. And at a rather petite 10.5 mm thick, the Nokia C7 is hardly what you’d call large, which is surprising given the claims around the battery life. The C7 is said to launch “later this year.”

Lastly we have the Nokia E7, a communication based device that is said to be sporting a QWERTY keyboard, an enormous 4 inch OLED screen and the same CBD technology found in the C6. The E7 is said to be just 13.6mm thick and include 16GB of internal storage as well as an 8 megapixel camera (starting to see a trend developing here) which is also capable of recording HD video at a 720p resolution. Nokia proceeded to have a dig at Apple during this announcement too, stating that “Some in this industry throw around the term ‘revolutionary’ with reckless abandon. The Nokia 9000 Communicator really was revolutionary. What impressed me most was the passion of those who owned it. Fans have been asking when we will introduce an heir to the thrown. The Nokia E7 is it”

Entertainment and multimedia specs come in the form of the HDMI output and Dolby Digital Plus Surround Sound although the E7 appears to also be aimed at business users, with the ability to view and edit powerpoint documents on the go as well as the ability to lock and wipe the device remotely, should such a situation arise that requires this functionality. There’s also support for Mail Exchange, Microsoft Communicator Mobile and Microsoft Share Point Server. The E7 is said to be launching in the last quarter of the year (anytime between now and the end of the year then) in dark grey, silver, white, green, blue and orange.

It would seem then, that Nokia are prepared to come out fighting in the last quarter of the year and it would seem that losing isn’t an option; with quite an arsenal of phones lined up, looking to take on the likes of HTC, Samsung and of course Apple. Will this be enough to put Nokia back on top or is it too little too late?
