‘Maniac’ Shot Entirely From Elijah Wood’s Perspective

Elijah Wood is well accustomed to getting his crazy on. Please see his disturbing turn as feel-no-pain and claw-all-limbs-off serial killer Kevin in “Sin City” for more, or check out his dog-talking ways on “Wilfred” for further reference.

But when it comes to his work in the upcoming remake of “Maniac,” Wood’s brand of insanity falls more in line with the murderous Kevin than the comparatively sane Ryan Newman. Wood stars in the updated version of the 1980 horror film as Frank Zito, a New York City loner who serves as landlord of a small apartment complex by day and stalks the streets to kill women by night.

Wood’s turn as Zito is bound to be very different from the late Joe Spinell’s cult classic version of the character, not just because of their physical differences, but also because director Alejandre Aja has apparently opted to shoot “Maniac” entirely from Wood’s own perspective.

“[It's] entirely in POV,” Wood revealed to MTV News at the Sundance Film Festival, where he’s busy promoting “Celeste And Jesse Forever.” “You only ever see me in reflections and occasionally there are out-of-body experiences where you see more of me.”

Wood added that while he’s not a fan of remakes in general, it was the “very different approach” that Aja has taken to this version of “Maniac” that made him bite.

“I normally don’t love the notion of remakes,” he said. “I’ve said that I’m averse to it, especially in horror films. But the approach was so different and so unique that I was really intrigued. It was fun.”

New ‘Dark Shadows’ Still Gives A Close-Up Look At Johnny Depp

With every new awesome image revealed of Johnny Depp in “Dark Shadows,” we feel more and more guilty about reacting negatively in our first look at his make-up in the upcoming Tim Burton film. A new shot of Depp as vampire Barnabas Collins shows him looking a bit more kid-friendly than we came to think of the character in the cult TV series, but we’re still digging the look.

Up until now, the images we’ve seen from the film have seemed to imply that Burton was taking a darker route, but could it be that “Dark Shadows” will have kid-friendly components as well? We’ll just have to wait for the first trailer to get a better sense of what the movie has in store.

When MTV News caught up with Chloe Moretz at the People’s Choice Awards, she argued that “Dark Shadows” would play to both younger and older crowds because of the way it brings together Burton-lovers and fans of the old TV show.

“I think also it’s open to the older group that actually saw the TV show back in the 1970s,” she said. “And also the new group that love Tim Burton, and they love supernatural movies and TV shows.”

Moretz added, “I think it’s a really revolutionary movie.”

“Dark Shadows” stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, Bella Heathcote, Moretz and Gulliver McGrath. It’s due in theaters on May 11.

Vin Diesel Suits Up As ‘Riddick’ In New Set Photo

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s… Vin Diesel on the set of “Riddick“?

While we’re just happy to see that the movie is busy filming, we’re a bit confused by Diesel’s superhero style get-up. Is this the vengeance-seeking gear in Riddick’s part of the universe? We can’t wait to find out.

The image comes courtesy of Diesel’s Facebook page, where he thanked his fans for giving him the chance to make a new “Riddick” movie. “Grateful for the opportunity to make magic,” he wrote.

There has been a lot of activity recently prepping the upcoming film. “Battlestar Galactica” actress Katee Sackhoff joined the production as the female lead, Dahl, a Nordic mercenary tasked with hunting down Riddick. In addition, Jordi Molla is playing the movie’s villain, a man named Santana bent on killing Riddick. Karl Urban will reprise his role as Lord Vaako.

David Twohy returns to direct his third Riddick film. He helmed the previous two entries, “Pitch Black” and “The Chronicles of Riddick.” The movie does not have a set release date yet.

Here’s the official synopsis for the movie: “Betrayed by his own kind and left for dead on a desolate planet, Riddick (Diesel) fights for survival against alien predators and becomes more powerful and dangerous than ever before. Soon bounty hunters from throughout the galaxy descend on Riddick only to find themselves pawns in his greater scheme for revenge. With his enemies right where he wants them, Riddick unleashes a vicious attack of vengeance before returning to his home planet of Furya to save it from destruction.”

‘Arthur & Lancelot’ Gets Benched, ‘Jack The Giant Killer’ Bumped Nine Months

Jack the Giant Killer

If you were looking forward to the Warner Bros films “Jack the Giant Killer” and “Arthur & Lancelot,” it’s time to hold on to that excitement. The studio has pushed both flicks way, way back, even going as far as to take “Arthur & Lancelot” off its release calendar.

The bad news first: due to an oversized budget and other “issues,” WB has decided to bench “Arthur & Lancelot” for the time being. A Warners insider told The Hollywood Reporter that the movie is “not dead,” but director David Dobkin apparently called his cast and crew Wednesday night to tell them production “wasn’t looking good.” “Arthur & Lancelot” was supposed to open on March 15, 2013.

One of the issues could be that the film’s two stars, Kit Harington and Joel Kinnaman, are successful TV actors—and just that. Neither of them have proven they can draw crowds, especially for a movie that WB was pegging to be similar to “Sherlock Holmes.”

That could mean bad news for the movie’s two stars. Kinnaman is shooting “The Killing” now and so should still be available if the film’s anticipated spring production start time gets bumped back, but Harington will need to return to the set of “Game of Thrones” to film the show’s third season. THR expects that he could be the movie’s first casualty.

Now on to the slightly less bad news: “Jack the Giant Killer” has been pushed back nine months to March 22, 2013. It was supposed to open on June 15. THR guesses that the Bryan Singer-directed fantasy epic was bumped to give the studio more time to iron out its special effects, and also attach trailers for it to “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” to help generate buzz.

In one last tiny scheduling change, WB has bumped “Rock of Ages” back two weeks to June 15, 2012.
