Poll: Will ‘Never Say Never’ Or ‘Just Go With It’ Win The Weekend?

Box Office“It’s hard. We’re nervous,” Brooklyn Decker told MTV News.

She’s not speaking, as you might suspect, about the situation in Egypt or who’s going to triumph on the new season of “Celebrity Apprentice.” Rather, the oft-bikini-clad Decker, star of “Just Go With It,” was referring to the competition her comedy faces at the box office this weekend: a young singer named Justin Bieber and his new 3-D concert film, “Never Say Never.”

Which flick will nab the B.O. crown? According to most box-office predictions, only a few million dollars in ticket receipts will separate the two films by weekend’s end. It’s anybody’s guess which one will end up on top.

Few Hollywood stars can as reliably open a movie like Adam Sandler. Even poorly reviewed films like “Grown Ups” ($40.5 million) and “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan” ($38.5 million) break big during their opening weekends. What’s more, his comedies that don’t arrive in the summer, like “50 First Dates” in February 2005, still become $100+ million hits. With “Just Go With It” debuting in over 3,500 theaters, Sandler’s latest is likely to cross the $30 million barrier.

“Never Say Never,” meanwhile, will benefit from premium 3-D ticket prices, the shrieking devotion of Bieber’s fan base, and the fact that in the last two weeks you couldn’t flip on the TV or glance up at a billboard without seeing the kid shaking those magical locks. The 3-D “Hannah Montana” opened in just 683 theaters in 2008 and managed to debut with $31.1 million. A year later, in almost twice as many theaters, the Jonas Brothers’ 3-D flick collected just $12.5 million. Is Bieber more Miley or more JoBro? Tracking services predict “Never Say Never” may fall just short of the $30 million mark, but it’s important to note that those surveys don’t sample the seven- and eight-year-olds likely to make up the bulk of the film’s audience.

All of which is to say: we’re not really sure what’s gonna happen at the box office weekend. What about you? Are you certain Bieber Fever will carry “Never Say Never” to victory? Are you positive Sandler’s B.O. clout will win the day for “Just Go With It”? Whether you’re voting with your head or your heart, it’s time to make your opinion known in our box-office poll!

‘Never Say Never’: After Justin Bieber, These Other Performers Should Get 3D Documentaries

Justin BieberLet’s face it: you’re a little bit intrigued by the new Justin Bieber documentary “Never Say Never.” If you’re like me, it’s all those cute little baby videos that sucked you in from the first trailer. Or if you’re like Channing Tatum, it’s because you understand that it’s an inevitability. Still, the reviews are positive so far and it’s supposed to be a great 3D experience.

“Never Say Never” is poised for a big box office weekend, and that will make it the second 3D documentary about a major performing artist in a year to bring home bucketloads of cast. The first, of course, was the Michael Jackson doc “This Is It” directed by Kenny Ortega. And, though they weren’t documentaries, the concert films “Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both World Concert” and “Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience” also went on to achieve great success in theaters. To me, that’s not a fluke… it’s a trend.

Needless to say, there are plenty of other documentaries about our favorite musicians that could project themselves in three dimensions, and we think the following music docs should come soon to a theater near you!

Kanye West
Ever since the whole VMA fiasco two years ago, Kanye West went from rock bottom to being on top of the world again. His latest album, “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy,” has surpassed everyone’s expectations as a work of brilliance. And let’s be honest, just from reading his Twitter account, you know that whatever’s going on in that head of his would be amazing (and terrifying!) to see unfold on the big screen.

Lady Gaga and Elton John
These two have been BFFs since they performed at the Grammys together last year, and recently they even recorded a song together for the “Gnomeo & Juliet” soundtrack. It’s only a matter of time before they announce they’re going on tour together, and when that day comes, the cameras better be rolling, whether we want to see Gaga’s meat dress projected at us from the big screen or not.

The Strokes
With The Strokes headlining this year’s Coachella and a new album on the way, the band has never been more popular. It only helps that lead singer Julian Casablancas launched a popular solo career and also appeared in the Lonely Island video for “Boombox” alongside “Saturday Night Live” star Andy Samberg. Like we needed more excuses to love them!

Madonna
You can’t have Lady Gaga on this list and not have Madonna. The woman literally changed the pop industry as we know it, and as she’s still going strong, it’s certainly time that someone chronicled her career on the big screen — at least before “Glee” comes out with a feature film and belts out “Vogue” for her.

Bruce Springsteen
The guy’s The Boss. Do you really need a better reason than that? Maybe it’s his 20 Grammys or his Academy Award? Better yet, what about his 40 year anniversary coming up in a couple years? There actually are a couple documentaries about Bruce Springsteen circling around on HBO and at the Toronto Film Festival this year, but still. 3D. It’s got to happen.

What performer would you like to see get the 3D documentary treatment next? Give us your picks in the comments section and on Twitter!

‘Justin Bieber: Never Say Never’ Review: It Might Make You a Belieber

With ‘Justin Bieber: Never Say Never,’ Jon Chu has cooked up an ultra-slick biopic packed with enough concert moments, awww-inducing baby footage and behind-the-scenes details that even the most Bieber-averse will come away with a newfound respect for the tireless young pop star.

A few weeks ago, New York Times writer and editor Neil Genzlinger wrote a scathing review called “The Problem With Memoirs,” suggesting that our memoir-saturated landscape was full of people who were encouraged to share their otherwise unremarkable lives (in his opinion) when they’d do best to either shut up or start a blog. In Genzlinger’s opinion, “There was a time when you had to earn the right to draft a memoir, by accomplishing something noteworthy or having an extremely unusual experience or being such a brilliant writer that you could turn relatively ordinary occurrences into a snapshot of a broader historical moment.”

This wasn’t a popular editorial, to say the least, especially among writers, and one could cop this attitude towards many biopics out there, if one were so inclined. I myself copped that ‘tude towards news of Justin Bieber’s biopic last August, writing, “That’s right, that Canadian dreamboat who was born in 1994 and isn’t even old enough to buy cigarettes? His life story is begging to be told, and soon all your Bieb-tastic questions will be answered … IN THREE DIMENSIONS.”

I was wrong.

Movie News Quick Hits: Paul Verhoeven to Film Man-on-Ghost Sexual Affair

- Presenting what Harry Potter, Hermoine Granger and Ron Weasley would look like as hipsters. [via Geekologie]

- Paul Verhoeven is angling to get back into the erotic thriller game with ‘Eternal,’ a film about a man who has a love affair with a woman who turns out to be a ghost that wants his soul. The words “Paul Verhoeven”, “erotic thriller” and “ghost that wants his soul” in the same sentence just made this writer’s day.

- The ‘Men in Black 3′ casting continues with a Betty White cameo and Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls as “Devil Girl.” In other news, this writer never thought he’d string “Betty White” and “Pussycat Dolls” in the same sentence. Today is a strange day.

- Vince Vaughn has taken up a stance in regards to the gay joke in the trailer for ‘The Dilemma’: He hopes it stays in the final film. Via Deadline:

“Let me add my voice of support to the people outraged by the bullying and persecution of people for their differences, whatever those differences may be. Comedy and joking about our differences breaks tension and brings us together. Drawing dividing lines over what we can and cannot joke about does exactly that; it divides us. Most importantly, where does it stop.”
