Sundance Film Festival Review: ‘Wish You Were Here’

Beautifully shot and with a memorable, tough-guy-meets-vulnerable-dad performance from Joel Edgerton, “Wish You Were Here” keeps threatening to become a first-rate mystery tale about secrets, lies and sex.

Its story flits back and forth through time, unspooling a tale about a Cambodian holiday gone bad and the ramifications of an ecstasy-fueled party that leaves one man missing and the lives of his vacation mates in shambles. But there are a few weakly drawn characters and a rushed ending that leaves the timeline-hopping plot strands in an unsatisfying cinematic heap. It all made for an entertaining opening to the 2012 Sundance Film Festival on Thursday (January 19), but one that left us itching for some truly great festival films in the days to come.

Edgerton plays Dave, an Australian boat builder and father of two, who jets off to Southeast Asia with his pregnant wife, Alice (Felicity Price), her sister, Steph (Teresa Palmer) and Steph’s boyfriend, Jeremy (Antony Starr). They tour Cambodia’s towns, beaches and flea markets. The handheld camera work and rocking score make for a compelling travelogue in these opening scenes. One night, though, they pop pills (save, wisely, for Alice, who heads to bed early). The next day Jeremy is gone, and the remaining three are forever changed. What exactly happened on that drug-addled night is the mystery at the heart of “Wish You Were Here,” and first-time writer/director Kieran Darcy-Smith expertly builds suspense as secrets are revealed through flashbacks and emotional, present-day confessions.

Dave clearly knows more than he initially lets on about what happened in Cambodia, and Edgerton perfectly conveys, often with one glance as the camera stays locked on his gaze, the extent of his anxiety-ridden guilt. Price, too (a relative unknown on American shores), delivers a layered, affecting performance as she learns, along with the audience, the brutal truths at the center of the film. Palmer, though, is given little to work with in the script, a problem not only of character but of storytelling, since her actions are so integral to driving the drama forward.

Yet “Wish You Were Here” still manages to be a taut mystery — until, that is, the film’s final act, as Darcy-Smith rushes to wrap everything up, leaving plot holes aplenty and a healthy dose of confusion. We won’t give anything away, but we will say this. If the lessons of films like “Midnight Express,” “Brokedown Palace” and “Return to Paradise” weren’t already clear, let “Wish You Were Here” be the final word: travel abroad for the towns, beaches and flea markets — and skip the drugs.

See Buffed-Up Tom Hardy in New ‘Warrior’ Trailer

The new trailer for brother-versus-brother fight movie ‘Warrior‘ hit today, with glimpses of a much buffer Tom Hardy and a battered Joel Edgerton.

Hardy (‘Inception’) stars as the younger brother who joined the Marines, and Edgerton (‘Animal Kingdom’) plays the older one who became a teacher and had a family he now can’t support. Nick Nolte is already drawing Oscar buzz as the father of this fractious clan, a former alcoholic who’s now training Hardy.

Picture ‘The Fighter,’ but with mixed martial arts and the two brothers getting into the ring and fighting each other. Gavin O’Connor, the man behind the inspirational Olympics hockey pic ‘Miracle,’ wrote and directed.

Our own Erik Childress pronounced it better than ‘The Fighter’ after seeing it at CinemaCon.

Watch the trailer after the jump.

‘The Bourne Legacy’ Casting Search Narrows Down To These Actors

The search for Jason Bourne’s successor is narrowing down.

Universal and director Tony Gilroy are on the hunt for their leading man in “The Bourne Legacy,” a character that is not Jason Bourne but exists in his same world of covert operations and espionage. An initial short-list of actors made the rounds a few weeks ago, and now, the field of contenders has shortened significantly.

Find out who’s about to test for the lead role in “The Bourne Legacy” past the jump!

Joel Edgerton
Deadline reports that Edgerton, soon to be seen in the prequel to “The Thing,” is one of the top “Bourne” contenders. The Australian actor left quite an impression following this year’s Oscar-nominated “Animal Kingdom,” and he’s set for an even bigger splash when he appears opposite Tom Hardy in “Warrior.” He’s a tough, gritty pick for the “Bourne” lead.

Dominic Cooper
Currently best known for roles in “Mamma Mia” and “An Education,” Cooper’s about to break big in “Captain America: The First Avenger” as Howard Stark, father of Iron Man, and as the vampire Henry Sturgess in “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.” He’s got a wild energy about him that would certainly distinguish him from Matt Damon’s super-agent.

Garrett Hedlund
If you saw “Tron Legacy,” then you already know who we’re talking about here. The erstwhile Sam Flynn could take a breather from disc wars and light-cycle races to compete in the “Bourne” universe, a move that we would wholly endorse for this budding action star.

Luke Evans
Probably the least known quantity on this list, Luke Evans has had his fair share of action roles in “Clash of the Titans” and the upcoming “Immortals” opposite Henry Cavill. Perhaps his relatively low profile actually works in his favor — rather than looking at Matt Damon’s successor, we would truly be viewing a newly “Bourne” hero.

Other Picks
There are some other potential actors in the mix according to Deadline, including Taylor Kitsch and Shia LaBeouf. It’s also entirely possible that the eventual “Bourne” successor will emerge from someone who isn’t on this list. But for now, this is the playing field — what do you think of the top contenders?

‘The Thing’ at NYCC: Macho Norwegians and How the Crew Freaked Out Customs

There was no beating around the bush when it came to ‘The Thing’ at the New York Comic-Con earlier today. As soon as the applause died down, director Matthijs van Heijningen introduced a brand-new teaser that no one had ever seen before. And, as the eagle-eyed among us noted, the stars on the panel — Joel Edgerton, Eric Christian Olsen, Ulrich Thomsen and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje — also stood up to take a peek, because none of them had ever seen it either.

This tasty morsel gave us a glimpse of what happened before the Thing descended on MacReady (Kurt Russell) and his crew in John Carpenter’s 1982 movie ‘The Thing.’ After Adam Goodman (Christian Olsen) convinces his friend and colleague Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) to go to Antarctica with him to investigate, well, something, they meet up with a team of Norwegian scientists to figure out what the heck is hidden in a mysterious block of ice. Unfortunately for pilots Sam Carter (Edgerton) and Derek Jameson (Akinnuoye-Agbaje), they get stuck on the site as well when all hell breaks out of that ice. Or, as we saw in the teaser, when Dr. Sander Halvorson (Thomsen) drills into it, releasing this shape-shifting terror among them. Tentacles, a giant blowtorch, and plenty of terror follow hot on the heels of this discovery as the Thing makes itself at home among the scientists.

So what we did find out about the movie? Find out after the jump.
