‘Battleship’ Trailer Commentary: ‘Blue Crush’ Meets ‘Armageddon,’ Still Awesome

The “Battleship” trailer has invaded theaters and computer screens, and MTV News has a few things to say about it.

By now you’ve probably seen the trailer in all its Taylor Kitsch-y, Brooklyn Decker-filled glory, but what you haven’t seen is the souped-up version featuring expert commentary from MTV Movie Blog head honcho Josh Wigler and MTV News Deputy Managing Editor Eric Ditzian.

Click on the video above to let the hilarity ensue, and then click past the jump to read even more thoughts on the trailer.

Clearly, no topic is off-limits, from Decker being in a role that’s very “new” for her to taking Alexander SkarsgĂ„rd in any capacity that we can to comparing the awesome bubble visual effect to “The Simpsons Movie.” The guys thought the trailer could use at bit more Rihanna, and we’re going to have to agree, but at least there’s a whole lot of awesome action to look forward to.

Ditzian is a bit concerned about the relationship between Decker and Kitsch taking over the movie and detracting from the aliens versus Navy core of the flick, but only time will tell if that is warranted. Still, the trailer has plenty of cool battle sequences with enough homages to the “Battleship” board game to keep us happy. The bottom line? The movie might be “Blue Crush” meets “Armageddon,” but we’re still looking forward to it.

Poll: Will ‘Never Say Never’ Or ‘Just Go With It’ Win The Weekend?

Box Office“It’s hard. We’re nervous,” Brooklyn Decker told MTV News.

She’s not speaking, as you might suspect, about the situation in Egypt or who’s going to triumph on the new season of “Celebrity Apprentice.” Rather, the oft-bikini-clad Decker, star of “Just Go With It,” was referring to the competition her comedy faces at the box office this weekend: a young singer named Justin Bieber and his new 3-D concert film, “Never Say Never.”

Which flick will nab the B.O. crown? According to most box-office predictions, only a few million dollars in ticket receipts will separate the two films by weekend’s end. It’s anybody’s guess which one will end up on top.

Few Hollywood stars can as reliably open a movie like Adam Sandler. Even poorly reviewed films like “Grown Ups” ($40.5 million) and “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan” ($38.5 million) break big during their opening weekends. What’s more, his comedies that don’t arrive in the summer, like “50 First Dates” in February 2005, still become $100+ million hits. With “Just Go With It” debuting in over 3,500 theaters, Sandler’s latest is likely to cross the $30 million barrier.

“Never Say Never,” meanwhile, will benefit from premium 3-D ticket prices, the shrieking devotion of Bieber’s fan base, and the fact that in the last two weeks you couldn’t flip on the TV or glance up at a billboard without seeing the kid shaking those magical locks. The 3-D “Hannah Montana” opened in just 683 theaters in 2008 and managed to debut with $31.1 million. A year later, in almost twice as many theaters, the Jonas Brothers’ 3-D flick collected just $12.5 million. Is Bieber more Miley or more JoBro? Tracking services predict “Never Say Never” may fall just short of the $30 million mark, but it’s important to note that those surveys don’t sample the seven- and eight-year-olds likely to make up the bulk of the film’s audience.

All of which is to say: we’re not really sure what’s gonna happen at the box office weekend. What about you? Are you certain Bieber Fever will carry “Never Say Never” to victory? Are you positive Sandler’s B.O. clout will win the day for “Just Go With It”? Whether you’re voting with your head or your heart, it’s time to make your opinion known in our box-office poll!

‘Just Go With It’ Review: Adam Sandler Lies His Way Into Love

It feels fitting that the soundtrack to Dennis Dugan’s ‘Just Go with It’ consists mostly of mash-ups and covers. The film, a remake of 1969′s Oscar-winning ‘Cactus Flower’ (itself an adaptation of a Broadway play, which was itself an adaptation of a French play), jostles between folly and genuine farce in a manner decidedly progressive for the likes of Dugan and his frequent collaborator, star Adam Sandler — which is to say, it’s better than their ‘Grown Ups,’ ‘You Don’t Mess with the Zohan’ and ‘I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry’. Make of that what you will.

Adam Sandler Chooses Brooklyn Decker Over Jennifer Aniston In The ‘Just Go With It’ Trailer

Want to know why we’re covering the trailer for “Just Go With It” on Movies Blog instead of on Hollywood Crush? Because, for the first time ever, Jennifer Aniston is starring in a romantic comedy but she’s not the romantic interest (or at least that’s what this trailer is selling).

The Adam Sandler flick also stars Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Brooklyn Decker in her big screen debut. Not surprisingly, she is the romantic lead in the film, the plot of which is a bit questionable: A man (Sandler, naturally) pretends he’s married to get laid, but then when he finds the girl of his dreams (Decker) he enlists the help of his “homely” (read: she wears glasses, not makeup) friend (Aniston) to continue the ruse just long enough for them to get fake-divorced. While the trailer works hard to make it look like Sandler will ultimately end up with Decker and not Aniston, we’re going to go out on a limb and say that somewhere along the way Adam and Jen will become more than just “Friends.”

I will give Sandler and his frequent collaborator, director Dennis Dugan, props for holding back and only including one awkward penis joke in the entire two-and-a-half minute trailer. Of course, it involved a young child running headlong into Sandler’s crotch (always hilarious).

I’m intrigued by the idea that Nicole Kidman, Nick Swardson, Dave Matthews and Heidi Montag are also in the movie. It also is a bit refreshing to know that Aniston won’t be the film’s main love interest because she does have a knack for comedy. Sandler looks like he’ll still be the same old Adam Sandler, but that’s been working well for him for as far back as I can remember. And if it ain’t broke… just go with it.

Did you think the trailer for “Just Go With It” was funny? And do you think Aniston and Sandler will ultimately end up together?
