Retinal implants could allow blind to distinguish objects

A newly-developed retinal implant, which allows users to perceive shapes and objects, could bring hope to blind people across the world.

The chip, which was developed by a group of researchers at the University of Tuebingen in Germany, directly replaces the light receptors that are lost one type of blindness -- retinitis pigmentosa. As a result, they use the rest of the eye's natural image processing capabilities, unlike other types of implant that sit outside the retina and require the user to wear external processing units.
