New official MeeGo screenshots show promise, influence

MeeGo’s official user interface guidelines could easily end up determining whether the platform sinks or swims — no one wants a phone whose UI looks like junk, after all. The minions at Nokia and Intel’s little pet project have posted new OS shots as examples of how to properly implement the interface in third-party apps, and we’ve got to admit — things are looking a lot cleaner, prettier, and generally more modern than the first round of pictures we saw back in June, thanks in part to a demonstration of the platform’s comprehensive theming capability that can totally revamp how UI elements look. We’re definitely seeing shades of webOS in the task switcher (pictured above), but then again, Nokia’s no stranger to borrowing ideas it likes. That’s all well and good as long as it makes for a great platform… and obviously, we’d need some hardware to do that. O N9, where art thou?

Nokia C6-01:

A little over a month ago, you may remember us posting regarding the Nokia C6 being In Stock here at mobiles.co.uk. Well, if the latest rumours, snapshots and model number are to be believed, the Nokia C6 already has a successor in the pipeline; the Nokia C6-01. The confusing naming conventions adopted recently by the finns are not only causing confusion amongst the public but also with networks too it would seem given that the leak which comes from Vivacom, a Bulgarian network provider, was spotted by eagle eyed viewers of an advert which pictured the C6-01 in an advert for the C6-00.

The C6-01 was also spotted on Nokia’s Dutch Online storefront along with specs that would point towards the C6 losing it’s QWERTY keyboard, gaining an 8 megapixel camera in place of the 5 megapixel on the current model and is also said to be sporting Symbian^3 OS where the current is stuck running on Symbian S60. The C6-01 is also said to have a nHD screen as well as 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity. Surely then, the C6-01 would be more of an upgraded alternative, than a successor – contrary to what the naming conventions would indicate.

Aside from the aforementioned spec changes, it would appear that the Nokia C6-01 remains very similar to the original, still keeping an almost identical form, although with slightly redesigned hardware keys on the face and a re-worked back which includes a relocated camera, a Dual LED flash and a speaker. Price is said to be around 280 Euros and we expect the official announcement from Nokia to be around the time of Nokia World 2010 on September 14th. (Image from MobileGeek via Engadget)

Vodafone teases with exclusive green Nokia N8, still mum on prices and availability

With September just a few days away, things are really about to get real for Nokia’s flagship N8, especially in Europe. For instance, Vodafone’s UK arm has just updated the “Coming Soon” page for this Symbian^3 device. What’s new? Just the fact that the carrier will be offering the phone in two colors: black and green, with the latter ironically exclusive to red Vodafone. Yep, that’s pretty much it — no prices or dates mentioned just yet, but we’ll be keeping an eye out for you N8 believers.

Fennec (a.k.a. Firefox Mobile) goes alpha for Android and Nokia N900

Well, it looks like you can finally get rid of that less-than-stable pre-alpha release of Fennec (a.k.a. Firefox Mobile) for Android — Mozillla has just released the full alpha release for not only Android (2.0 and later), but the Nokia N900 as well. The big news with this release is an increase in “performance and responsiveness to user actions” (always a good thing), as well as two new features dubbed “Electrolysis” and “Layers,” the former of which lets the browser interface run in a separate process from the one rendering web content, while the latter promises to “greatly improve performance in graphic intensive actions like scrolling, zooming, animations and video.” You’ll also get full support for add-ons, and Firefox Sync built into the browser to let you have a continuous experience as you move between devices. Hit up the link below for the download link, and for a quick video overview of what’s in store.

Fully-functional Android port for N900 threatens to beat N9 to market

The NITDroid project has been slogging along this year in an effort to get Android fully ported to Nokia’s N900, and the progress has been promising so far — but wouldn’t it be nice if you could, you know, make calls? Looks like these guys are making some solid progress there with a new video showing both incoming and outgoing calls doing… well, something or another on the N900 side. Cellular data’s coming along nicely, too, as you can see on the video after the break — so here’s the million-dollar question: when this is rock-solid and ready for prime time, are you jumping ship or sticking with Maemo?

Nokia C7 leaks again… Still not official

You may have seen our post last week about the Nokia C7 video leak, which didn’t really gives up much in the way of specs. Well, it would seem that the Nokia C7 has now winged it’s way into the hands of Eldar Murtazin (Mobile Review) who is widely renowned as the guru of mobile phone leaks and is already high up on Nokia’s hit list (Google Eldar Murtazin and you’ll see what i mean.)

Despite (in spite of?) this, Mobile Review have posted a preview on the as yet, un-announced Nokia C7. Here’s what we know. The C7 is said to be a ‘Lite’ version of the Nokia N8 if you like, sporting a lower cost plastic chassis and an 8 megapixel camera and LED flash (vs. 12 megapixel and Xenon flash on the N8) The HDMI port has gone and the internal memory is said to have reduced to 8GB. Aside from the above, everything else is said to remain the same, a 3.5″ nHD AMOLED screen, 680MHz CPU, 256MB RAM, 1200 mAh battery and of course, the proprietary Symbian^3 and all of the usual connectivity options, Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n) and Bluetooth 3.0.

Mobile Review have also estimated the cost of this stripped out handset at 350 Euros, 20 Euros cheaper than the Nokia N8. Well, i think we’ll wait for official announcement from Nokia but if that is the case, who would chose not to pay that little bit extra given how much more you get for your money? Nokia C7 gets an early look: ‘hardly a market leader’

The upcoming C7′s been well-leaked at this point, but one thing it hasn’t undergone is the famously exhaustive Mobile-review once-over that takes weeks to read and even longer to digest. Actually, this isn’t so much a review as a “first look” based on prototype hardware — and as such, it’s quite a bit shorter — but it still gives by far the best, clearest, and most in-depth glance at Nokia’s second Symbian^3 device to date. Unlike the over-the-top N8, Mobile-review comes away concluding that the C7 is an exceptionally well-balanced device for a Nokia — solid specs at a more aggressive price than its Nseries cousin — but acknowledges that it’s still outclassed by the competition and isn’t likely to draw any non-Nokia loyalists into the fold. MeeGo, where art thou?

Nokia N9 Specs Revealed Unofficially

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the Nokia N9, we reported way back in June about the QWERTY touting slider and at the time were dubious as to whether, as previously reported, that the N9 would run Symbian. We felt it would be far more likely that in fact, Nokia would chose to load MeeGo onto the handset and the latest developments would seem to support this.

A Chinese site has apparently got it’s hands on a working prototype of the as yet un-announced handset from our friends over at Nokia. They’ve been putting it through it’s paces and have graced us with a list of specs, the handset is noted to be an ‘early prototype’, but looking at the specs, we doubt this is likely to be far different, if at all, from the handset that Nokia will likely announce very soon.

Onto said specs then, the list kicks off with a 1GHz Qualcomm SnapDragon processor, which would tie in with a statement made by Qualcomm CEO (Paul Jacobs) back in February, that Nokia would be using there chipsets in the near future. The leaked spec also confirms a 4inch WVGA touchscreen, GPS, Wi-Fi, HSPA and Bluetooth; with the handset weighing in at 160g. There’s also a 5.0 megapixel camera, 720p HD video recording, 512MB RAM and on-board memory of 64GB. Which, with the exception of the last point, makes up a very believeable and certainly intruiging list of specs. Have Nokia finally got their act together and created a phone which will appeal in the mass market where the N900 failed or is it a little too late? Let us know in the comments section below and keep your eyes peeled for more info and any official announcement from Nokia.

Nokia C7 leaks on video!

The leaks are coming thick and fast this week and today it’s the turn of Nokia and the eagerly anticipated Nokia C7. Having already leaked previously, the C7 now has the honour of getting snapped in the wild as well as being fondled on video.

The phone is expected to be Nokia’s second device to run the all new Symbian ^3 operating system and looks to run it quite well though there is a little lag which we’re happy to put down to this being a pre-production model. From the video and the leaked images we can see the C7 has been given a bronze metallic rear case, reminiscent of the N97 Mini.

On to specs and whilst they remain unconfirmed at present, expect Symbian 3 to be joined by an 8 Megapixel camera with a dual-LED flash, 3.5 inch touchscreen display, microUSB port and a 3.5 mm audio jack. Unlike the N8, Nokia’s first (and flagship) Symbian ^3 device, the C7 also gets dedicated call answer and end keys so clearly hardware requirements for Symbian 3 aren’t as strict as say Windows Phone 7.

We’ll be sure to keep you up to date on the Blog as soon as we find out more about the C7 but in the mean time feast your eyes on the video below to see the phone in action. Source.
